Tendonitis

Your muscles couldn't do what they need to do without the help of tendons. Tendons are thick bands of connective tissue that attach muscle to bone and act as a sort of pulley system to get your joints moving.

Tendons are found throughout the body. The Achilles tendon, which runs from your calf muscles to the heel, is the largest tendon in the body. It's also the strongest, and it controls the lift of your heel necessary for walking. It's also commonly affected by tendonitis.

Tendonitis occurs when a tendon becomes irritated or inflamed. Certain tendons are more likely to become inflamed than others; this includes tendons at the heel, shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

Overuse or repetitive stress disorders are the primary reason for tendonitis. However, trauma, infection, and certain conditions like arthritis can also cause tendonitis.

How you experience the pain of tendonitis will depend on the joint affected. Your pain may be sharp or dull, burning or not. Most often there is pain with movement and the area is tender to the touch.

Most Common Forms of Tendonitis

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • deQuervain's (wrist) tendonitis
  • Golfer's elbow
  • Patellar (kneecap) tendonitis
  • Pitcher’s elbow
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Tennis elbow

Tendonitis Treatments

Treating tendonitis involves a three-pronged attack:

  1. Addressing the inflammation (say, with anti-inflammatory medication)
  2. Giving the tendon an opportunity to rest (through immobilization for example)
  3. Rehabilitating the joint (as with physical therapy)

Much like muscles, tendons and other connective tissues can become stronger with exercise, although it will take much longer than it does to build muscle. So, while tendonitis can take a while to heal, the good news is that surgery is not often required to eliminate your pain.

At the Joint Replacement Institute in Naples, Florida, our orthopedic specialists offer in-house physical therapy as well as a variety of pain management approaches to address tendonitis.
