Elbow Pain

A complex hinge joint, your elbow joins your forearm and upper arm, allowing easy movement of your arm, hand, wrist, and fingers. Your elbow even plays a role in your ability to perform the many fine motor skills required for many of our daily tasks – like eating, grooming, texting, using a credit or debit card, or driving a car.

When you experience elbow pain, it can put a serious crimp in your day-to-day activities. The pain itself may present in almost any imaginable way such as a sharp pang, dull ache, or burning sensation. It may also occur along with numbness and tingling in the hand.

The symptoms you experience will depend on the reason for your elbow pain, the presence of any additional medical conditions, and your overall health and tolerance level.

Common Causes of Elbow Pain

When you experience pain at the elbow, it may be due a wide range of diseases, disorders, and conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Biceps tendonitis
  • Bone spurs
  • Bursitis
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Golfer’s elbow (inner elbow pain), also known as medial epicondylitis
  • Nerve entrapment

  • Radial tunnel syndrome
  • Repetitive stress disorders
  • Sports injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tennis elbow (outer elbow pain), also known as lateral epicondylitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Triceps tendonitis
  • Trauma

Because there are so many conditions that can cause elbow pain, it is important to see an orthopedic specialist well-versed in the diagnosis and treatment of problems affecting the elbow. Making an appointment with one of the highly qualified providers at the Joint Replacement Institute in Naples, Florida, is a good place to start.

Your treatment options may involve self-care strategies (including immobilization), medication, injections, PRP or physical therapy. In some cases, surgical treatment may be required to relieve your elbow pain.
