MRI’s: Why it’s Done?

July 8, 2022

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic imaging technique often recommended by doctors for diagnostic purposes. MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves (generated by a computer) to create detailed images of the tissues and organs of the body.

If you suffer from a musculoskeletal issue and your orthopedic doctor has recommended magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), you may be wondering why it’s done and what happens during imaging.

Let’s talk about why your doctor may have recommended an MRI, how it is performed, and where you can go in Naples, FL to get an MRI scan.

Why MRI Is Done?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a commonly performed noninvasive and painless imaging procedure performed to help your doctor have a detailed look at your skeletal system, internal organs, and tissues of the body. Since an MRI produces clear, crisp, cross-sectional, and very high-resolution images of your body’s musculoskeletal system, an orthopedic doctor can diagnose various orthopedic problems. MRI can evaluate:

  • Any abnormalities in the discs of your spine
  • Abnormalities of the joint caused by a repetitive or traumatic injury, such as torn ligament or cartilage
  • Tumors in bone and the soft tissues of the body
  • Bone infection
  • Inflammation
  • Progression of arthritis or other degenerative diseases
  • Muscle tear or strain
  • Accumulation of fluid in Baker’s cyst or knee
  • Injury to meniscus or bones

Moreover, sometimes, MRI is performed to track the progression of your disease and the effectiveness of your treatment. It can also help your doctor monitor how your orthopedic injury is healing and make necessary adjustments to boost healing and address problem that arises.

How is an MRI Scan Performed?

For an MRI scan, you’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown and lie face up on the scanning bed. The scanning bed will slide into the donut-shaped MRI machine and the scan will begin. You’ll hear a variety of clicking and loud knocking sounds while your images are being taken by the machine.

You’ll be provided with headphones or earplugs to wear before the procedure to protect your hearing. You’ll also be asked to stay still during your image so that a high-resolution image can be produced. During the scan, you can also communicate with your radiologist through an intercom system. If you feel any problem or concern during your scan, you can tell your radiologist.

If your doctor has recommended a contrast MRI, you will be given an IV injection of contrast material before your scan. Experiencing a temporary metallic taste in your mouth after a contrast dye is normal.

The entire MRI scanning procedure will take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the specific reason for your scan.
