Preparing for Joint Replacement Surgery

April 10, 2020

Joint Replacement Surgery

If you’re up for joint replacement surgery, you’re not alone. Roughly a million Americans undergo joint replacement surgery every year. While there are many alternatives for treating joint problems, joint replacement is sometimes the last and only option that can bring lasting pain relief and restore function. Like with any surgery, you should adequately prepare before a joint replacement procedure. Doing so will help you recover faster and avoid complications during and after your surgery.

Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You should be as educated about your procedure and what to expect as possible. Your orthopedic surgeon is an expert in joint replacement and should be able to answer any questions you may have. Capitalize on their knowledge by asking many questions as you want and be specific about concerns you may have.

Organize Your Medical Information

You should expect to meet with several health professionals before and after your joint replacement surgery. They will inevitably ask you repeatedly about certain personal information, your medical history, medications you take, and your lifestyle. To help save time and energy, organize your information and have it handy whenever you see a medical professional.

Cut Back On Certain Medications

If you take any medications, you should inform your surgeon beforehand. Some drugs increase risks during surgical procedures, and your doctor needs to assess whether some medications need to be stopped temporarily to prepare for your surgery.

For example, some anti-inflammatory drugs make it difficult for blood clots to form, which can lead to excessive bleeding during surgery. Steroidal medications can suppress the immune system, increasing the chance of infection. Adjustments to these medications can make your procedure and recovery go smoother.

Rehabilitation

Joint replacement surgery is typically followed by rehabilitation, which involves teaching your body to once again function effectively. However, there’s no reason to wait for surgery to start strengthening your body. Ask your doctor if you should begin physical therapy before your surgery to strengthen your body in preparation for the procedure.

Lifestyle Changes

If you drink or smoke, now’s a good time to quit. Smoking weakens your immune system and slows down healing. Meanwhile, alcohol can interact dangerously with the anesthesia used during the operation. You will likely need to cut back or completely stop these activities before your surgery and during recovery.

Plan Logistics

After surgery, you’ll be unable to do most everyday activities independently for some time. You’ll need someone to help and support you as you recover, so be sure to make arrangements with loved ones.

You may also need to organize your home to make it easier for you to move about and use the facilities. Installing special toilet seats, adjusting your bed’s height, and clearing away unnecessary clutter are just some of the things you should do to avoid any accidents and make your recovery easier.
