Don’t Shrug Off Shoulder Replacement Surgery

July 24, 2020

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

While surgery is never the preferred option for anyone, it can sometimes be the only viable and effective solution. When this applies, it is best to seriously consider surgery instead of shrugging it off.

If you severely injure or damage your shoulder, or have found conservative treatments do not work to relieve your shoulder pain, you may want to consider shoulder replacement surgery. The surgery replaces all or part of the damaged shoulder joint with artificial components and can enable you to have full use of your shoulder joint once again without experiencing pain or limited function. Avoiding shoulder replacement surgery can cause further damage to your shoulder joint. It can also mean you will suffer from pain and limited mobility for a lot longer than necessary. As such, it is best to take the recommended treatment of your doctor seriously. If you are recommended to get shoulder replacement surgery, it could bring you much relief and restore lost mobility.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

The shoulder is a complex joint made up of many ligaments, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and bones. The three main bones are the humerus (upper arm bone), scapula (shoulder blade) and the clavicle (collarbone). The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, and the ball (at the top of the humerus, called the humeral head, sits within the glenoid, a shallow socket located on the scapula). The humeral head is lined with cartilage to allow it to move smoothly in the socket and to prevent the bones from rubbing together. The shoulder can be prone to injury and damage through wear and tear, and conditions such as arthritis can cause the protective cartilage to wear away, making movement in the joint painful.

Shoulder replacement surgery can significantly improve the movement and function of a joint as well as ease symptoms of pain. If you have a condition that is causing you pain in the shoulder or if you are finding it difficult to use your arm, your orthopedic surgeon may recommend surgery if other treatments, such as medication and physical therapy, have been unsuccessful. A shoulder replacement may also be carried out if you have a serious shoulder injury or fracture, severe arthritis, or a torn rotator cuff.

Today, shoulder replacement surgery can be performed quickly and safely in an outpatient environment with state-of-the-art methods, such as minimally invasive techniques. As a result, you can recover quickly, experience less pain, and get back to living life to the fullest.
