Hip Pain? 4 Easy Steps to Recovery

September 7, 2022

woman suffering from hip pain

Hip pain has been dubbed the “invisible enemy” of millions of Americans – and for good reasons. Even if it’s minimal or episodic, hip pain deserves your attention, as it may be due to something that has the power to put you out of commission.

Fortunately, many cases of hip pain respond well to self-care measures. Below, we’ve outlined four easy ways you can effectively manage or even banish hip pain as well as when you’re supposed to seek proper medical evaluation for it.

Alternating Cold and Heat Therapy

The combination of cold and heat therapy is often used as the first-line treatment for hip pain. Applying a cold compress over the affected area for 15 minutes several times a day can help reduce swelling. Alternately, applying a heat pad or getting a warm bath or shower can help loosen the stiffness and alleviate the pain.

If your hip pain is due to injury, it’s important to compress it after applying cold compress or ice pack. Wrap your pelvic and hip area in a compression bandage to increase circulation. Afterward, you need to elevate your hip at home. It might be difficult to do at home, but you can elevate your hip using a recliner to avoid aggravating the injury.

Taking Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs, which you can get over the counter, can help reduce swelling and manage pain. However, make sure to follow proper dosage, as this class of drugs have been known to cause ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems if not taken properly.

Moving It

Movement might seem counterintuitive if you’re experiencing hip pain, but it can actually help relieve it. Physical activity, particularly non-weight-bearing exercises, can also help prevent stiffness, increase flexibility, and build up strength.

Get your hip moving with gentle stretches, aerobic exercises, mild resistance training, and aquatic therapy.

Taking a Break

The right balance of exercise and rest is imperative when you’re dealing with hip pain. Listen to your body. Take a short break to stretch and avoid sitting for long periods of time. Try to avoid putting direct pressure on your hip as well, such as lying down, bending, or sitting on the affected side.

Orthopedic Specialist in Naples, FL

If the self-care measures above are unable to provide adequate relief; or if your hip pain is caused by a fall or trauma, or is accompanied by deformity, inability to bear weight, swelling, and or bleeding, get it checked out by an orthopedic doctor. Seeking proper evaluation is crucial for determining the best type of treatment for you, lowering your risk for complications, and ultimately ensuring the success of your recovery.

If you live in or around the Naples, Florida area, your go-to expert for your hip pain is one of our board-certified orthopedic specialists here at Joint Replacement Institute. We offer a vast array of treatment options, including physical therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, and cortisone shots.
